How should I take this medicine?

You need to start taking this medicine at least 1 week (although 2-3 weeks is preferred) before you enter the malaria zone, whilst you are abroad, and for a further 4 weeks after you leave.

What is the active ingredient in Lariam?

The active ingredient is mefloquine.

Lariam can cause nausea, vomiting, depression, difficulty sleeping, strange dreams, mood changes, anxiety, confusion, panic attacks or a general feeling of agitation. The side effects can last a number of weeks.

It is not recommended for patients suffering from mental health issues.
