Propecia is the brand name of a medicine called Finasteride and is used to treat male pattern baldness.
The general medical term for hair loss is ‘alopecia’. Male pattern baldness is a type of hair loss which, as the name suggests, affects men.
If your hair loss is patchy, it is unlikely to be ‘Male Pattern Baldness’. In such instances Propecia is likely to be ineffective.
Propecia is a clinically effective treatment for Male Pattern Baldness when taken correctly. Any regrowth is not instant, and require a few months of treatment before results are seen depending on the extent of hair loss.
The side effects for finasteride are uncommon. Less than one in 100 men who take finasteride experience a loss of sex drive (libido) or erectile dysfunction (the inability to get or maintain an erection). The side effects are typically reversible when the medicine is stopped.
